The Zoo, Part One

Well, here's something I never do anymore...BLOG!! Life has been happy and moving along. We had the chance to escape winter for a moment at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. I still haven't explored the place thoroughly, but I've decided that it might be the Best Zoo Ever. Parts of the exhibits remind me of Disneyland!

Lee had to go to the zoo as part of a class assignment so we figured I could go down later in the day with the kids and meet him there. It was so much fun!! I (shockingly) remembered to take some pictures. I now remember why I tend to not take pictures.

My kids are fast moving and easily distracted. I am terribly impatient and not a great photographer. This combines into epic photo fail most of the time. But hey, we're weird and so are our family photos!

Could have been awesome, if not for the photographer!

At least the peacock was cooperative

and the spider crabs!

Decisions, Decisions...

So, I took about a year just contemplating whether or not to keep doing a blog. As far as I can tell, the main person who reads it is my ex-husband's wife and I'm still not really sure how I feel about that.

Anyways, obviously I just decided I may as well keep blogging. I have such a bad memory that it's good to have this spot to remind me of how cute my kids were back when, after I've forgotten.

A lot of things that were up in the air have been mostly settled. We are definitely staying put in our little town for at least four more years, so that is a big thing off of my mind. I love it here. Crimson has successfully conquered her first year of middle school with the best grades of her life. That's a pretty big accomplishment in my mind! The best part is that it was entirely self-motivated. That's one awesome life skill and she's really blessed to have that one!

Rejeanne has made so much progress. She's starting to express herself more verbally which is very exciting for me. She's also engaging other kids more. I wonder if the two are connected at all. Either way, she's really growing and doing well. She's still an impish little sweetheart.

Cyrus makes me laugh so much. He totally has my personality, so I now understand how I infuriate people all the time. Sorry about that. He gets over stuff so fast and he's constantly in motion, both body and mouth! He's my little buddy and I love him to bits! He hurt himself yesterday and I think he pulled a groin muscle. He kept insisting a freckle was an ant bite because he was hurting right under the freckle from the muscle. He said he felt good enough to go to the park, but after 20 minutes he comes over to me and says "Mama, I lost my run!!" So it turns out he's hurt himself enough that he's not able to run, which really seemed to annoy and perplex him. I guess things aren't as much fun if you can't run everywhere!

I guess the other big news in life is that I'm having another baby this summer. I'm due on Cyrus' birthday and he's very excited about getting a baby for his birthday. Of course, he's been planning his birthday wish list AND his birthday party since January. I've never seen such a thing before. Hopefully it will live up to expectations!

The other big thing is that my oldest daughter Kellie is turning 18 this month. It's hard for me to believe. I love her deeply. She's a beautiful, complicated, talented, kind, lovely girl...woman? Yikes! She's tough and I think she's awesome. I'm seriously blessed to have her in my life.

Maybe someday I'll get all five in the same room. You never know, it could happen!

oh my!

me (to Lee): I don't think John Paul II has been dead long enough to be beatified.

Cyrus: *hits me with a boot*

Lee: What did you say before he hit you with a boot?

Me: I don't know. I think he whacked it out of me.

Crimson (to Lee): She said something about Long John Paul the Third being christified.

(Well, guess we know what Saint JP does during Lent...sells fish out of a drive up window!)

Oh, the Irony.

When I was growing up, there was always another Julie. Usually, there was another Julie R. I hated never knowing if someone was talking to me or some other Julie. So, I decided to name my kids odd names. In my opinion, Crimson has the oddest name. This is due to the fact that she has one of the most common last names possible. Her cousin Jasmine has had to be identified by birthdate once in the doctor's office waiting room because she had the exact same first, middle and last name as another child in the waiting room at the time. I figured with a name like Crimson, this scenario would NEVER happen to my child.

This is not to say that I've never met another Crimson. On the day Crimson was born, I met a two year old named Crimsun and 9 months later another Crimson was spotted in my small town in CA. I figured maybe it would be like Amber or Madison. Ya know, a random name that just all the sudden jumped in popularity for an unknown reason. My fears never came to fruition as I have never encountered another Crimson since 2001.

Until today.

That's right kids. In my dink town in South Dakota, there is another Crimson. For now, it's not a problem. This girl is about 2-3 years older than my Crimson. But it was brought to my attention that they have the same last initial. This means my poor daughter will have ANOTHER Crimson S. to deal with for at least one year of high school. Who knows, maybe they'll be buddies. Of course, being besties with another Julie is how I ended up getting called Velma in high school. Yup, cuz people like to be able to know which Julie they are talking to or about, right? *sigh*

Poor C. Who would have thought there would ever be another Crimson S in the same school some day...

Random Stuff

Okay, California, I've finally settled on two things I miss about you. First, the constant availability of lebni and Indian food. Out here in SD, I have to wait about three days from the time I start making lebni until I can eat it. It is also far more expensive to make it than to buy it. Oh lebni, how I miss you. As for Indian food, my dishes are NEVER as good as the cheap-o Indian buffet. So sad.

Oh well, at least Crimson and I got to eat at the Chinese buffet last night for less than $15. Good times. We also went to the movies and the book store and Orange Julius. It was a good mom-daughter day. I saw Last Airbender with her expecting to suffer through it and I ended up really liking the movie. Go figure. I miss having mom-daughter day every day that she is here. She's been enjoying reading a lot and playing with her friends though. She's a great sister too. Cyrus and Rejeanne both spend a decent amount of time playing with her, but she says that it is hard to get Rejeanne to play.

We've also semi-purchased a different car. I say "semi" because it's really not purchased until the bank funds the loan. Until that point, they can take back the car. I actually know someone that happened to years ago so I'm trying to not get attached to my kids having leg room and me having a driver's side window with some A/C and cruise control. Hopefully I'll know by Friday if we get to keep it. If not, it will be like having a free rental. I'm thoroughly enjoying it and have this weird feeling that I'm going to have to give it back. I think I just feel that way because I haven't had a car loan since 1997 and it feels really awful. I don't like car loans. It sure is a cozy car though...*sigh*

I start the freakishly early morning schedule tomorrow. It's the only way I can work out and my back is very unhappy from lack of swimming lately. I think I have to be up by 5am for my new regimen. I hope I can do it because I'm starting to feel like I don't have a choice! My back needs love. At least I've lost 10 pounds since the 6th. That's bound to help.

The Glory of Orthodontia

So Crimson has this expander thingy in the roof of her mouth to spread out her incredibly narrow palate. Well, things get caught up there. Apparently she had a kiwi seed stuck up there for 3 days that finally came out on the plane. Tonight, we had spaghetti with meat sauce. She got a piece of burger stuck up there and couldn't get it out. Well, I'm not willing to have a piece of anything remain stuck in her mouth so we tried to get it out. A bamboo skewer, 20 minutes, and a little brush thing later, I dislodge the offending meat. Of course, I freed it with such force that it flew out, hit me in the face and ricochet'd down my shirt.

So, is that gross or what?! hahahaha

The Sorrows of Being Nine

I thought this day would come in Kindergarten. Crimson is such a gentle, sensitive girl. I figured the kids in Kindergarten would eat her alive and change her forever. I didn't happen. Every year, I keep thinking "It'll happen this year" because I don't believe that sensitivity can make it through the torture of elementary school and I KNOW it can't survive junior high. Crimson is at the tail end of 3rd grade, I'm thinking this is another year that went surprisingly well. But no, it's finally the year that Crimson realizes that kids can be mean and that there isn't much one can do to change that. I feel so bad for her. Her feelings are really hurt. I told her to just avoid them the best she can and if they lay hands on her, beat the daylights out of them or die trying. Crimson, my obedient one, says "Mom, I'm supposed to tell the teacher if that happens. We aren't supposed to hit back." *sigh* Alrighty, I told her to do it that way the first time and if it happens again, wail on them til someone pulls you off and I'll tell the school that they didn't solve the problem the first time with their hippy nonsense so I told her to issue a beat down. She seemed satisfied with this. After talking to her step-mom, I discovered Crimson has been hiding her face and standing there when these kids are berating her, so then I had to get her back on the phone and give her The Lecture. Much like sending a soldier to war, I had to tell her to suck it up and not show weakness to the enemy.

Why is public school like this?? Is it so friggin' hard to just go to class and mind your business? Crimson pretty much does her own thing to the tune of her own drummer. I doubt Crimson even understands when this kid says "you think you're all that" and does everything possible to exclude her and demean her. This year has been so hard on Crimson. She's had to deal with discovering she is not great at everything, that people can be mean, that home life is not what it could be, etc. She all the sudden has started to catch the nuances of life and the faults of those around her, as well as her own. She has no hard exterior because she never knew she needed one. I really wish I could just take care of this stupidity for her, but I can't. I really hope she can learn how to never let them see her pain. It's really the only way to make that sort of thing stop (short of punching them in the face anyways).

I miss my Crimson. People, teach your kids manners. Seriously. Kids don't have to be mean ya know. They can learn to be civil just like anyone else. They just have to learn it AT HOME!! So, ban the snarky cartoons and speak to them kindly as much as you can. Oh, and take the teacher's side whenever there is a problem. Grrrrr!

Bunnies Bunnies Everywhere!

Crimzoni and the Bonkasaurus

I LOVE LOVE LOVE hanging out with Crimson and her friend Bianca! They are so hilarious when they are together. Not only that, but I learn something new about Bianca every time!

We went to the Pavilion in Sioux Falls to check out the science center they have for the kiddies up there. Here's what I learned about Bianca:

1. She can make a near perfect imitation of a semi-truck horn
2. She prefers grilled cheese to pizza.
3. She has to pee as often as I do.
4. She can make a rad dino face:

5. She takes great photos!

6. She's an awesome friend

I so miss that "best friends" comradery from the elementary school days. There just isn't time for all that when you're grown! It's just a different kind of thing once ya grow up I guess.

Gender Neutral Child-rearing

Many people don't know this because I don't make much noise about it, but I like to experiment on my kids. Now, not like reattaching limbs in weird places but just trying out all these random theories either I or someone else have come up with. Some of my ideas have been short tries and some of them are life long endeavors. So far, all of them have resulted in the desired results. With the first child, I wouldn't react to any injuries unless she started crying first. The result of that was that she would fall or something and bounce right back up and keep going unless she was truly hurt. That was quickly undone by her adoptive parents and it was pretty funny for me to watch her freaking out over the slightest thing and the whole house would come running. Kids are very responsive to their environments. Experiment #2 was to never say the word "no" to my second child in the hopes that I could avoid having a two year old in a "no" phase. While this worked wonderfully with Crimson (she would just say "I don't like that" and not while shrieking either!), Rejeanne was apparently born with the word "no" hardwired in to her vocabulary. I'm pretty sure that I just didn't stick to that theory very much with Rejeanne, plus she was in daycare early which totally ruined my experimental environment!

Another one I've tried, mostly with Crimson, is to insist that people ask her if they can hug her, etc. For instance, instead of saying "Come give X a hug", I'd insist that people say "Can I hug you?" or "I would love to give you a hug" and then respect her decision. This was someone else's theory that it would nurture a notion that affection was optional and that each child has a right to his or her own body. The thought was that teaching a child early that people may not touch his or her body without permission and that an environment without the usual social pressure of kissin' granny would help a child be much more able to identify when someone is trying to violate their personal boundaries and be a bit of protection against abuse or at least make a child more inclined to report abuse. I have to say that this one has worked amazingly with Crimson. If you cross a line with Crimson, she will say so and she will expect you to stop. She will also rat you out. I'm very impressed that only a few early years of enforcing this rule has resulted in a stronger respect for her own body than I think many children have, as well as a determination that people who violate her boundaries are not acceptable friends. I was only able to maintain this rule firmly for about the first three years of her life and much much less since she has lived with her dad since 2005. I have to say that experiement has produced much stronger results than I had anticipated!(I also have food experiments that I do with my kids that seem to be working good as well. I'll save that diatribe for another time!)

Now on to gender neutrality. I've always been annoyed by the pink not-so-active girl toy section and people's obsession with slathering girls in pink. There is also the flip side of that where there are no cleaning toys or much imaginative role-playing toys for boys and if a boy is in pink, it's just not too acceptable for the most part. Another one of my experiment was if no one buys the toy in advance or suggests the toy, what toy will a kid pick out on their own? When Crimson was little, she had neutral toys and clothes. No characters on the clothes, no pink or boyish stuff. Everything was very neutral in primary colors. Crimson on her own never role-played and prefered toys normally associated with boys. Lots of sporty stuff, things that shoot, and cars. Crimson LOVED cars. Even now, Crimson is not especially attracted to things people would consider "girly". I should point out that Crimson did go through a clothing phase when she was kindergarten age where she would only wear the color pink, but with spiderman or spongebob boy underwear. Personally, I would not have allowed the boy underwear, but her stepmom bought it for her, so that was that. Once she hit first grade, she would only wear boy clothes. Over the last couple years, she is starting to be more accepting of girl clothes. Anyways, it was an interesting experiment that had me thinking that maybe girls really don't have an automatic desire to tea party and prance around in high heels and feather boas.

Then comes Rejeanne. I pretty much do the same with her as I did with Crimson, but it doesn't last long. Rejeanne makes it very clear that SHE is a girly girl! She gravitates to the pink and sparkly. She steals my bracelets. She turn household items into bracelets. She color coordinates. She got her first babydoll by stealing loaves of bread and carrying them around like babies (this is before she had any little brother hanging around!). She also tried to feed my foot some cheerios and a sippy. That was it, I bought her a baby doll! She also ADORED a little kitchen my friend Gwen brought over for her! Who knew she'd like a kitchen??!! I ended up buying her a different one since transporting the original wasn't feasible at the time and it has been one big Martha Stewart adventure around here ever since! Now, I try to keep the house under control, but busting out a tablecloth and setting the table doesn't really happen around here. So what does Lee find Rejeanne was doing today in her room instead of napping??

I almost fainted! For the record, she's never played tea party or anything like it. Note how she used her favorite blanky as a tablecloth! Holy moly!!!!!

Big One, Little One

One of the happiest parts of my life

Watching little sisters try to kiss each other just because they can

Crimson says...

Sometimes, it's GREAT to have big feet!!!

21 December 2008

Sorry folks!

No pics today!

School is finally over and the awful weather is scheduled to subside just in time for us to catch our plane in Omaha. If our Secret Santa is reading this, thanks for the toothbrush holders (I was actually thinking I needed these) and for your psychic abilities in knowing that my husband LOVES Chex Mix. Good job, Santa!

I'm trying to clean the house so I don't come home to a mess after being gone three weeks. My back is really slowing me down. I hope I can survive travel and different chairs. I'm so excited to see Crimson and for her to spend time with Rejeanne and Cyrus. I'm determined to get some decent photos of all of us, together, looking like a family, so keep checking back for those!

I'll probably be posting like a fiend while in California, as long as I can find a way to get my pics from the camera onto the computer out there. If I can't, I'll just play catch up when we get home.

I've decided to make Christmas break weekends a work time for me. My kids are going to be busy climbing grandma all weekend and Crimson will be at Jason's, so what to do??? My current plan is to do a set of divorce papers for a friend and work on my genealogy. Thanks to Mr. I remember Swedish from my mission, Bro. Ric Jensen, I managed to give the Swedes another try. I've had a wall on the Swedish lines since I was about 16. I finally managed to break through and I have added 3-4 generations back on all of the Swedish folks!! How exciting! It is so wonderful for me to have FINALLY accomplished this! I started out only knowing back to about 1880 with only sketchy details and very little about their locations and families in Sweden. Now, I have a TON of stuff and totally detailed back to the 1790's on most lines. There is so much more for me to find too! I just ran out of time and had to work on other things now. So, after so much success, I'm planning to work on some of Lee's family history as well. Since I'm doing so great with Swedish records (which I have to say are REMARKABLE, especially compared to the American records available in the same time frames), I'm going to work on Lee's Swedish great-grandmother and see what I can find. It's been a long time since I've been excited about researching families because I just hit so many walls and felt kinda hopeless with it. I'm glad I set it aside for so long. Technology had a chance to catch up with me! That said, if anyone wants help with Swedish stuff, I'm in the mood to do it!

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas. Hopefully, I'll be posting during CA time, but if not, I'll be back January 9th with photo overload!

Crimson's Halloween

Crimson wanted to be a "headless zombie who is carrying a head" for Halloween. It turned out really awesome!

The Mystery Bridge

We finally were able to venture across the bridge to see what is on the other side. There is a trail back there and I fully intend to explore it, but not when it's soooooo dang buggy near dusk. I'm going to give it a try in late September when the bugs have died down but before it gets too cold!

Finally

Crimson hides her teeth if she knows you're taking a pic of her. I did the same thing when I was a kid(actually, I still do). Despite the snaggle teeth, Crimson has an awesome smile that is much, much better than her fake hide-the-teeth smile I've been capturing all summer. So, here are a couple

25 June 2008

So, uh, guess what part that is...DEFINITELY a boy! I'm pretty freaked out but I suppose I'll adjust to having a boy eventually.

His face is adorable. He kinda looks like a more somber version of Rejeanne. I was able to see him really clearly on the ultrasound. I could see the hair on his head and even his fingernails. It's pretty cool. The still pics don't really do him justice.

This is some weird 4-D shot. That large thing by his eye is apparently his fist and arm. You can see his nose, mouth and chin pretty good. I still think these 4-D pics are really creepy! I just thought I'd share it anyways :)

Anyways, the news from the doctor is that the extra fluid is most likely from the diabetes but the boy seems to be perfectly formed. He's got a functioning esophagus/stomach as far as we can tell. He was even breathing in there, which is something that is optional in utero. He was just practicing. As far as anyone can tell, this is an anatomically correct child :) The perinatologist doesn't even feel that I need to see him again and he gave the all clear to deliver here instead of in Sioux Falls, which is completely awesome.

The baby is also already about 7 pounds and is measuring about a week older than he actually is. He's going to be a big boy. I think he'll be taller than the girls at birth (if my inability to breathe is any indication!).

So for everyone who was sending the good thoughts and prayers this way, thank you! It seems to be working :)

If anyone is keeping track, Rejeanne is still sleeping in Crimson's bed. It's the cutest thing! Rejeanne won't sleep in anyone else's bed EVER.

Rejeanne also went into the pool finally today. The whole Rejie! Then of course, we couldn't keep her out of there! She was turning purple because she was in there too long and it was kinda chilly for her I guess and she still got mad about getting out.

As for Crimson, she's been having a blast with the neighborhood girls and meeting even more of them at the pool. She's been doing a lot of diving, which is something I have never done. She is loving South Dakota and we've been having a great time (except for all the dang doctor appointments!).

It's shaping up to be an awesome summer!

16 June 2008

Three more days until Crimson arrives and there is still soooooo much to do! I'm going to try to finish the baby's quilt tonight. I know I won't have time after Crimson gets here. I took Rejeanne to the pool today and she FINALLY enjoyed herself!! I was starting to worry that the little stuff falling from the trees and sticking to her feet was just going to be a dealbreaker for her for the rest of the summer.

For all you prayin' types that read my blog, please pray for my son. Just pray that he's healthy. The doctor's getting me a little nervous about him but I'm not going to get a better picture for a week or two so I'm not going to post about it. I'm sure he's okay but just the slim chance that he's not has got me a little stressed. So yeah, just pray for the little guy if you're so inclined.

27 May 2008

I'm so excited! My Mother's Day gift and card from Crimson finally appeared in the mail today! Crimson made me this awesome little vase thing with starchy tissue paper on the outside. It's really pretty. The picture doesn't really do it justice. She also sent me a big card that she drew a winter tree and snow on. I miss her soooooooo much! I can't wait until she gets here for the summer.
